Beatriz Silva, a master’s student in Data Science and Engineering of the Department of Informatics Engineering, received the 2022 ESCI Oral Presentation Award during the 56th Annual Scientific Meeting of the European Society for Clinical Investigation held in Bari, Italy, between 8th- 10th of June 2022. The prize, worth 200 euros, distinguished Beatriz's work entitled “Synthetic Data Augmentation for Biological Datasets” for being one of the 20 best oral presentations of the entire congress, which brought together more than 100 presentations from various research centers, located in over 20 different countries. Developed at the Evolutionary and Complex Systems Group (ECOS) of the Centre for Informatics and Systems of the University of Coimbra (CISUC) under the guidance of Prof. Nuno Lourenço and Prof. Francisco Pereira, Beatriz’s work sought to present solutions based on Deep Learning for the automatic generation of biological data, with the objective of overcoming the limitations of small datasets which is a problem commonly found in the ​​life sciences domain.
