The Networks, Communications, and Security (NCS) group carries out research in the areas of network optimisation and management, resilient protocols and algorithms, social computing, security, and privacy.
Current research topics include resilient and energy efficient communications, Self-X and Zero-touch infrastructures, human-in-the-loop (HITL) systems, Internet of Things (IoT), security and privacy, Cloud-to-Things continuum, software defined networking (SDN), and network function virtualization. Application domains comprise all aspects of IoT and Industrial IoT, smart cities, socially interactive environments, 5G and beyond cellular networks, critical infrastructures, smart grid, and cloud/edge environments.
Recent key contributions pertain to the Cloud-to-Things continuum (security and privacy in IoT, SmartGrids and 5G, Zero-touch infrastructure and resource management, unobtrusive sensing, and HITL Cyber-Physical Systems), mechanisms for distributed trust and authentication management, federated authentication mechanisms in SDN and Web Services, security mechanisms for smart grids, and automated privacy protection mechanisms for mobile devices. Most NCS research is carried out in the scope of European/international projects, as well as R&D industry contracts. Particular attention and emphasis is given to European R&D frameworks, as well as to international cooperation, researcher exchanges, joint publications, joint PhD supervision, and joint research activities. NCS has also been involved with key roles in the organisation of high-quality conferences (e.g., ACM SenSys 2021, ACM SIGCOMM 2025), TPC membership of INFOCOM 2024, and editorial boards of reference journals (e.g., Computer Communications, Computer Networks).
The group has PhD students from various countries, and a team of young researchers at MSc and BSc levels. NCS regularly promotes workshops, meetings, and seminars, to foster research interaction.
