Title: "No, we can't just let you hack your way to doomsday"

Abstract: Over the past few years, Critical Infrastructures (CI), such as smart grids, water, oil and gas distribution networks,  have become more complex due to an increasing number of interconnected devices, sensors and actuators. This situation has been further aggravated by the emergence of the IoT generation of Industrial Control and Automation Systems (IACS), that is expanding the boundaries of such infrastructures well beyond the scope of the single or aggregated?plant, mono?operator domain, while also encompassing a high degree of capillarity.
The importance of such IACS is often a matter of national security, due to their role in providing support for a wealth of Essencial Services, which makes them a preferential target for malicious activity. Therefore, it comes as no surprise that a great deal of effort is being invested in their protection, to ensure their availability and safety. This is no easy task, nonetheless, since the heavily distributed nature of such systems makes it difficult not only to characterise incidents, but also to assess their progression ? also, reacting and defending against these threats often requires orchestrated and collaborative distributed detection and evaluation capabilities, well beyond the reach of a single entity.
This seminar will present an overview on the present state of the IACS security landscape, discussing the challenges involved in protecting such infrastructures. The presentation will also encompass a presentation of the I&D activities undertaken within the context of the CISUC/ LCT research team, with a particular focus on the cybersecurity?related aspects of  the ATENA and CockpitCI European projects.
