"5G, from standards to exploitation: Altice Labs testbeds and use cases"

Abstract: First 5G standards emerged in 2019 with 3GPP Rel-15 technical specifications. Since then, open-source and commercial implementations appeared and evolved, making available 5G promised features. Those implementations have allowed laboratory and testbeds activities, and are the basis for many production deployments. Altice Labs is experimenting with 5G and related technologies since 2015, with a first public demonstration in 2019 on its private 5G testbed, currently covering the headquarters campus, indoor and outdoors. In the meanwhile Altice Labs have conducted other initiatives and is currently coordinating the ‘5G connected port’ working group of the PRR project NEXUS, focused on the community of the Port of Sines. In this talk, Francisco Fontes will provide an overview of 5G evolution and how Altice Labs has been experimenting and exploiting the technology, internally and with external entities.

Bio: Francisco Fontes received his degree in Electrical and Computers Engineering from the Instituto Superior Técnico - University of Lisbon and his PhD from the Technical University of Madrid, in the Telematics Engineering Department, in the area of Distributed Management of Telecommunication Networks. In September 1991 he started working at what is today Altice Labs, currently being Chief Architect for Next Generation Networks and leading the Research and Innovation Management team. His main activity has been conducted in research, development projects, demonstration, implementation of customer solutions, technical training for senior managers, and internal and external consulting. He specialized in IP networks and services, focusing on local fixed and mobile access networks, IPv6, IMS, C-RAN and Edge Computing. Now he is focused in 5G
and related implementation technologies (e.g. SDN and NFV), its development, deployment scenarios and use cases. His most recent research activities have been and are being conducted in national and international funded projects like P2020 FLOYD (V2X, 5G, AI/ML), EC EDIDP DISCRETION (SDN and QKD), PRR NEXUS (NPN 5G) and EC Imagine-B5G (5GAdvanced). He represents Altice Labs in One6G and his team also participate in 6G-IA. In relation to the application, he has been evaluator in all four 5GinFire and last two Fed4Fire+ open calls, and the first opencall o Imagine-B5G. He collaborates with the Department of Electronics, Telecommunications and Informatics (DETI) of the University of Aveiro as a guest professor. He is also a senior researcher at the Telecommunications Institute (IT) and member of the Management Committee of the Aveiro Hub and the National Board.
