Title: Data Storage Management in Distributed Computing

Abstract: Database modeling defines the logical design and structure and determines data storage, access, and updates in a Database Management System (DBMS). In the conceptual modeling phase, the problem's abstraction is mandatory before moving on to any solution and its implementation. Databases conceptual models enable moving to physical models automatically. However, these still consider the implementation as an extra step in the development process, and there is usually a dedicated team of developers for this implementation. Thus, the characteristics of the conceptual model need to holistically consider both a complex system and a typical DBMS. In the same way that conceptual models transform database models into physical ones, there is a need to convert distributed systems models of data analysis from conceptual to their physical implementation.

Bio:  Gonçalo Carvalho received the B. Sc. in Geography from University of Coimbra (UC), the M. Sc. degree in Geographical Information Systems from University of Trás-os-Montes e Alto Douro (UTAD) and B. Sc. in Informatics Engeneering from Polytechnic of Coimbra (IPC), institutions located in Portugal, in 2005, 2009 and 2016, respectively. After the experience as a web and software developer between 2015 and 2018, he currently has a studentship for his Ph.D. research from the University of Coimbra. His main research interests are in the areas of databases, distributed systems, edge computing, cyber-physical systems, and machine learning.
